DescriptionsSilicon Carbide has excellent resistance to corrosion, high mechanical strength, high thermal conductivity, a very low coefficient of thermal expansion, and better thermal shock resistance than alumina at very high temperatures. Silicon carbide is composed of tetrahedra of carbon and silicon atoms with strong bonds in the crystal lattice. This produces a very hard and strong material. Silicon carbide is not attacked by any acids or alkalis or molten salts up to 800ºC. In air, SiC forms a protective silicon oxide coating at 1200ºC and is able to be used up to 1600ºC. The high thermal conductivity coupled with low thermal expansion and high strength give this material exceptional thermal shock resistant qualities. Micro Grit Green Silicon Carbide is made by a precision water classification process using material that is produced from the reaction between high purity silica sand and petroleum coke in a resistance-type furnace. Measuring 9.0+ on the MOHS scale of hardness, silicon carbide is one of the hardest abrasives known in the industry. The inherent friability of the sharp crystalline structure assures the continuous exposure of new cutting edges, which produces a faster and cleaner cutting performance.
